The monument is located at the west side of the government building in Liestal. It was created by a committee initiated by the marksmen club of Liestal to honor the 85 local veterans who died during WWI.
The statue on the fountain was created by Jakob Probst. The stone plate behind the statue list the names of the dead soldiers and has the headline: "1914 Kameraden, es galt der Heimat 1918" (Fellow soldiers, it was for the home country). The fountain basin has the inscription: "Dem Feind zum Trutz, dem Land zum Schutz." (Resistance to the enemy, protection for the country). 1934 the statue was remodeled: the open book in front was replaced by a helmet. In 1955 additional plates were added that list the names of the soldiers who died during WWII.
