Santa Cruz Tarplant (Holocarpha macradenia)
This plot of land is actively managed by the California National Guard to protect this special status species and the habitat where it grows. This is critical habitat for a small, unique flower called the Santa Cruz Tarplant is able to grow. There are only 15 such locations remaining. The flower is a type of sunflower, but it is unique because it oozes a tar-like substance and emits a strong scent, when disturbed. The plant and this area is protected under the California and Federal Endangered Species Acts. The plant only grows in California.

This plot is located near a golf course in Santa Cruz.
