This station is a U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey standard bench mark disk, located in Holmes, NY. It is located on the NYNH&HRR (Conrail) Maybrook Line, on a bridge spanning a stream, just south of a road (Holmes Road) crossing:
AT HOLMES, DUTCHESS COUNTY, ABOUT 360 FEET SOUTH OF THE NEW
YORK, NEW HAVEN AND HARTFORD RAILROAD STATION, AT BRIDGE 112.81,
IN THE TOP OF THE CENTER OF THE EAST COPING, AT A ROAD CROSSING,
85 FEET SOUTH OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE ROAD, 10 FEET EAST OF THE
CENTER LINE OF THE EAST TRACK, AND ABOUT 1-1/2 FEET LOWER THAN
THE TRACK. A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED P 77 1935.
The Holmes railroad station, as described, no longer exists. Otherwise, the description is adequate.
From NY Route 292, turn onto Holmes Road (County Road 30), and park at the pull-offs along the roadway near the lake.
The mark is on the east side of the bridge, which is on the 'trail side' of a new 'rail-with-trail' arrangement being implemented by the state. The trail and rail are separated by a chain link fence.
The Maybrook Line has been dormant for nearly 20 years, and is in disrepair, but is still legally 'active', so venture accordingly.
