Lake Jackson is thought to be the largest sinkhole lake in Alabama. It covers 408 acres (at least a mile in diameter) with 51% lying in Alabama and 49% in Florida. The underlying limestone fractured, dissolved and collapsed many, many years ago. As surface water drained into the sinkhole it carried clay, sand and silt which eventually plugged up the opening of the sinkhole. Over the years rain and surface water filled the sinkhole forming a lake that is up to 28 feet deep at its deepest point. The lake is now used for recreation.
