Located at the Junior Livestock Center is a monument containing a plaque and bell surrounded by three flag poles. There is a small plaque monumented underneath the bell that reads:
THIS BELL AND FOUNDATION WAS GIVEN TO THE JUNIOR LIVESTOCK CENTER BY THE JOHN O. CUMMINGS ESTATE. THE BELL WAS RECLAIMED BY MR. CUMMINGS ABOUT 1948 AND WAS ORIGINALLY ON AN ENGINE OF THE N.C.O. RAILROAD |
Another larger plaque is monumented on a lava rock base and reads:
JUNIOR LIVESTOCK CENTER DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF JOHN O. CUMMINGS AUG. 16, 1893 -- OCT. 23, 1973MR. CUMMINGS WAS INVOLVED IN THE ORIGINAL SHOW AND SALE HELD IN MAY OF 1949. HE WAS ACTIVE IN THE PROMOTION AND IMPROVEMENT OF EACH SUCCEEDING SALE AS A DEVOTED MEMBER OF THE ALTURAS ROTARY CLUB. PLAQUE PRESENTED BY ALTURAS ROTARY CLUB, JUNE, 1974 |
I could locate no online information for John Cummings other than his headstone, which is located at Alturas Cemetery. It mentions him as a WWI veteran and receiving the Christian Cross.
