High above the central entrance is a niche within which is a statue of Our Lady Of Lourdes, otherwise known as Mary, the mother of Jesus. It is an original artwork, installed with the completion of the building in 1908. The cornerstone for the Cathedral was laid on June 28th, 1903 and in 1913 it became the Cathedral of the newly formed Catholic diocese of Spokane.
Above each of the three main entrances is a bronze sculpture and bas-relief of a religious figure, one of Jesus, one of Mother Mary and baby Jesus and one of Mother Theresa and a pupil. Each sculpture is backed by a bronze bas-relief of a large shell.
In about 1995 Reverend Monsignor James Ribble, of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes in Spokane wished to have new doors made for the Cathedral as a millennium project. His vision was of bas-reliefs of “
Saints of the Centuries” for each of the doors. He became acquainted with Spokane artist
Dorothy Fowler, was impressed with her work, and commissioned her to do the doors. She created bas-reliefs in bronze for each of the three 14 foot tall main entrances and for the 9 foot tall north trancept door. Each door depicts as many as 12 different “
Saints of the Centuries”. As well as designing the doors, she created the three sculptures above the three doors.
