The olive tree stands in the center of old Rome and it was offered by Israel to commemorate the 150 years of Italian unification. Oddly, for some reason, it's not an old olive tree - which can be quite precious - but a relatively young tree. As a comparison, the olive tree offered to Vatican by the Israeli prime-minister Binyamin Netanyahu following is visit to the Vatican, was 200 years old (hardly a waymark as it was planted in the private gardens of Vatican City).

This gift had the cooperation of the Foundation Keren Kayemeth Leyisrael (Jewish National Fund)..
