A life-size replica of the Bartolomeu Dias Caravel was built in Portugal and sailed to Mossel Bay in 1988 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the landing of the original Dias Caravel, sailed by Bartolomeu Dias in 1488. Visitors may board the 130 ton ship and explore the intricate wooden decks. The replica was named Bartolomeu Dias after the Portuguese explorer.
The Maritime Museum with the 130-ton Caravel Ship has collections of model ships, maps, diaporamas and paintings.
