The mural measures 6 by 9 metres & was part of the WonderWalls Festival held early this month. The festival is aimed at showcasing the artistic underbelly of Wollongong. Fortunately the mural is well above the footpath so vandalism & bill posting has not defaced it.
This mural featured in a page 3 article in the Illawarra Mercury with the artist on his platform & the outline drawn. The entire mural was painted with spray cans & has transformed a very bleak wall on Burelli Street into a work of art.
There is no explanation as to the meaning of the mural but it certainly grabs your attention. Koalas only eat certain eucalypt leaves but fortunately the man's neck has the right variety. If they could see his expression they might be concerned.
The Festivals website (listed below) says of the artist Smug:
'Smug is a UK based street artist who creates incredibly realistic yet highly stylised graffiti paintings. Born on the south coast of New South Wales, Smug left Australia to base himself amongst some of the worlds most prolific artists in Europe. With a career spanning well over a decade Smug has pushed his style in a direction that is well known for it’s extreme photo-realistic nature, amazing ability to capture light, and an inane ability to capture his subjects personality'.
My photographs were taken from the opposite side of the street apart from the close up of his signature. A pedestrian walking below the mural provides scale.
