In Peoria, along Knoxville Avenue is Apple's Bakery.
The bakery is located to the east, along the northbound side of the road, just after a slight bend in the road.
The building is a single story structure painted beige with bright green window panes. There is a sloped shingled 'roof' on the front, and flat roof elsewhere. The entrance is at the corner. The hand-painted sign has the following:
"Apple's
neighborhood gathering place
a passion for food, wine and conversation"
Baked offerings include cookies, pies, cakes, coffee, and other items. In addition to 'wheat-gluten' items, they include an assortment of non-gluten items as well. Particularly good were the Monster cookie (gluten), which is related to a penut butter cookie. We had a piece of berry pie (non-gluten) that had the right balance of tart-sweet. There were also items that were dairy and nut free.
Though you order cafe items at the counter, the eating area is in a room apart from the bakery. Unfortunately, for gluten-free people, there were few real non-bakery options available.
The web site states that Apple's started in 1989 as part of O'Leary's Restaurant. In 1998, the bakery relocated to the present location. The proprietor is Mary Ardapple. The web site includes a page where you can order goods online and have them sent anywhere in the U.S.
Much to our chagrin, it was not open on Sunday - we had to come back a later date.
