The Central Bethlehem Historic District has 2 dominating periods of architecture. One was the early development at a community dating from 1741-1844 which is heavily influenced by Moravian culture and design. The other from 1845-1938, which is more Victorian in style.

The Moravian community functioned as an Utopian experiment which allowed for cultural expression and religious adherence to a pietistic belief from German theologians. The European immigrants were required to lease their land from the Moravian Congregation. This restriction and residents of other sects of religion forced a changed around 1844, resulting in Bethlehem becoming a robust and growing commercial and industrial community. The growth of Bethlehem was directly effected by the Lehigh Valley Railroad and Bethlehem Iron Company, which became Bethlehem Steel.
