Kayakoy was an Ottoman town where Christian and Muslims lived in perfect harmony. However, the pact established in 1923 between Greece and Turkey, determining reciprocal reallocation of minorities (Christians in Turkey would be send to Greece and Muslims in Greece would be send to Turkey) destroyed this balance.
One day, they came for the Christians. Cornered them up and escorted them to the nearby harbor of Fetyhe, and from there, shipped to Greece. The social pattern of the town was deadly wounded by this sudden move. Eventually the Muslims left, one by one. And Kayakoy became a ghost town.
There is a great novel, based in these real story, written by Louis des Berniéres: Birds Without Wings.
