Located within the
Modoc National Wildlife Refuge as visitors travel to the Refuge headquarters is a lookout vista point. There are two placards located here as well as a wooden bench to sit and view the abundance of wildlife that exist here. One placard highlights the history of this area and the events that led to the creation of this Refuge. The other placard highlights the habitats and flora that can be found while visiting this area. These habitats include the deepwater marsh, mudflats, seasonal marsh, uplands, meadows and grain fields and wet meadows. The fauna found here include songbirds, great blue herons and ducks, Canada geese, pheasants and many more species.
In my visit in November I noticed a large population of ducks, Canadian geese and a couple of great blue herons. The marshy waters were frozen and in the early morning as the sun came up, the whole area popped loudly, like a shotgun going off, as the ice cracked and melted in the heat. It was quite a thrill to hear.
