This memorial is in honour of the crew of HMCS Esquimalt, a minesweeper of the Royal Canadian Navy that was built in 1942. On April 16, 1945, she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-190 off Chebucto Head, Nova Scotia in the approaches to Halifax Harbour, making her the last Canadian warship to be lost in World War II. Of the 71 crew members, only 27 survived the sinking. The bodies of 16 crew members were recovered, but 28 others went down with the ship and were never recovered. Three plaques on three sides of the memorial list, respectively, the names of those who survived, those who died and were recovered, and those who were never recovered. In addition, a plaque on the front of the memorial displays a photo of HMCS Esquimalt and gives the ship's specifications. The memorial was erected on April 10, 1989 by the HMCS Esquimalt Memorial Association.
