The façade of this cathedral contains three nearly identical entrances, one in each bell tower and one centred in the building. They appear to be of brass or bronze, deeply set in the multi stepped brick casements and surmounted by semicircular brick arches. The major difference in the three doors is the engraving on each door and the figures above. The engravings are of religious figures, as are the bronze scuplted and bas-relief images above.

1115 W. Riverside Ave., opened on Thanksgiving Day, 1908, is the oldest existing Roman Catholic church in the Inland Empire. It is built of granite and brick in Romanesque style, with two square towers at the corners, 164 feet in height, dominating the main facade. The altars, communion rail, pulpit, and episcopal throne are of Italian marble and Mexican onyx. The woodwork throughout is of quartersawed oak, and the windows of Munich stained glass. The firm of Julian and Williams, architects, designed the cathedral.

The cornerstone for this Cathedral was laid in 1903 and in 1913 Our Lady of Lourdes became the Cathedral for the newly created Diocese of Spokane.

Since the church was remodeled in 1971, there is a mixture of old and new: Italian Romanesque style arches span the interior spaces while a square baldachino amplifies prayer and song for the congregation. The original Italian marble altar depicting the sacrifice of Calvary supplies a stunning symbolic and artistic backdrop to the new altar -- the gathering table where the community of faithful share the Eucharist. The sweet tones of the original W. W. Kimball organ in the loft complement the clear resonant notes of the Druffel Memorial organ in the transept. The crowning beauty of the Cathedral is the Bavarian stained glass windows which create a panorama of Judeo-Christian history and tradition.
