Capital BIXI is a public bike system. It’s the bike that’s really an alternative means of urban transport. Accessible to everyone, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, three seasons of the year, from April to November.
BIXI is was selected by the NCC to implement a BIXI system in Canada's Capital Region. Capital BIXI, the bike share service in the core of Canada’s Capital, started in May 2011. The first phase of the service was implemented by the NCC and included the installation of 10 stations with a total of 100 Capital BIXI bicycles in various locations throughout downtown Ottawa and Gatineau.
Other stations and bicycles are being added by the City of Gatineau and by the City of Ottawa with the objective of installing 50 stations and 500 bicycles.
After London and Washington, this represents the third significant capital that has chosen a flexible and ecological transportation solution.
The company filed for bankruptcy in January 2014. Velogo (CycleHop) took over the bike share business with all new bikes and new locations. The closest planned location (2015) is on Colonel By Drive at the end of Daly Ave.
