Jedediah Strong Smith, b. 1788 in New York state. This plaque dedicated by C M Goethe to note where this pioneer explorer, mountain man, and missionary crossed the American River.

He was killed in 1831, barely 30 years of age, by Commanche Indians on the Santa Fe Trail.
The bicycle trail along the American River bears his name.
Not many know that he was a missionary as well. This plaque on the church property conveys this.
