The sign is hung from a bracket projecting from the wall of the pub. The name
is across the top of the sign. The sign's background shows an arch formed from
blocks and, in the arch, is a barrel on its end with a pitcher and bottle
standing on it.
A sign on the pub wall tells us:
Woodin's Shades' name is derived from William Woodin
who purchased the premises in 1863. The shades part refers to a wine vault
with a drinking bar, shaded by being either below ground or being covered by
an arcade. For many years the Woodin's Shades has been a favourite watering
hole for the traders of Petticoat Lane and Spitalfields market. The Woodin's
Shades is situated in Bishopsgate, an area of the City that was first
developed by the Romans in AD 200. Bishopsgate is named after Erkenwald,
Bishop of London (675-693) who ordered the Roman gate to be rebuilt.
