Flowers That Thrive On Salt Air, Attention And Money.
After we designed the park (which you see looking back towards shore) to satisfy the Bay Conservation and Development Commission, the City Planning Commission, and even the Art Commission, we had to make sure it would satisfy the most finicky customers of all--the flowers and shrubs.
A Salty Garden.
The salt air, the wind and the fog from the Bay make life pretty tough for your average garden variety plant. Out landscapers looked all over the world for plants that could thrive in our kind of climate. Finally, we found what we were looking for in Australia and the Mediterranean--and it wasn't dune grass.
It took 14 months and about a million dollars but the garden does indeed grow. Today, some 3000 changing annuals, including pansies, primroses, marigolds, impatiens, and many more varieties are thriving
The Green ($$$) Thumb.
Every November our staff of gardeners plants 15,000 bulbs, including tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths to bloom in the Spring. All year round we're testing new plants to see if they will thrive in the climate of salt air, tender care and MONEY.
