This one-room school served children for nearly a century before being moved to the Steel County Historical Village. The sign tells more about it:

Steele County Historical Society

Country Schoolhouse. Built in 1865 about four miles south of Owatonna on the Lemond Road, District No. 14 was the fifth school building in Steele County. It continued in use until 1962 when it was closed with consolidation.

Forrest Mutzel, on whose farm the building was located, gave it to the Steele County Historical Society in 1963 when it was moved to this site. Assembling of classroom furnishings, equipment and textbooks was done by members of the Steele County Rural Teachers Association.
