These Historic Croton Yews are located in Croton Point Park and are on the New York State Historic Tree Register. They were planted by Dr. Richard Underhill. A success businessman, who with his brother William, used the site to provided New York City with bricks after Lower Manhattan burned and also to create a vineyard on the point with a worldwide reputation.
The sign at the site reads:
"HISTORIC CROTON YEWS
These four ENGLISH YEWS
(taxus baccata) were planted
by Dr. Richard Underhill
in the mid 1800's when he
lived here with his family.
Their mansion stood nearby,
overlooking the Hudson River.
The Yews were purchased
for thirty-seven and 1/2 cents
each from a nursery in
Flushing, NY. They are now
on the New York State Historic
Tree Register."
