"Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, Born in Garrymoile, Ireland in 1827, he was privately tutored and entered upon his collegiate studies at Wexford. Because of the famine in 1846 to 1847, he left school to assist his father. He took an active part in the rebellion of 1848, and left Ireland because of its failure. Arriving in Milwaukee on June 14, 1849, he pursued a civil engineering and surveying career while he studied real estate law at night. When the American Civil War broke out, he joined the army. He was Colonel of the 42nd Iowa Volunteer Infantry and the last commanding officer of the 7th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry. Toward the end of the war, most of his service was against the Plains Indians in Nebraska and Colorado. The rank of brevet Brigadier General was given to him for gallant and meritorious service during the war."
