There are few trails in the Sangre de Cristo mountains and Hayden Pass is a nice one connecting one valley to another. It is steep on both sides with rocky areas.

Hayden Campground is about 5 miles from Coaldale and is a good place to air down and disconnect the sway bars. The trail starts out going uphill right away. Be sure to watch for a place on the right of the trail where you can pull off and take in the spectacular views. The mountains are on both sides as you climb this narrow mountain trail, making the views spectacular.
There is a narrow section of the road before you reach the top that is very dangerous when icy. There are no rocks or trees to stop you from sliding off the side. This section should not be attempted if there is any ice.
There is a sign that marks the summit of Hayden Pass. There is plenty of parking. The summit makes a good place for lunch. The summit is the highest point in trail, with an elevation of 10,693'.
The trip down the other side starts off very steep. You will get a glimpse of the San Luis Valley below. as you come to a long steep straight section of loose rocks, there are some large rocks that could cause some problems for stock vehicles with lower clearance. This section is much more difficult coming up from the other direction.
