The cannon was in action in the Philippines from 1898 to 1902. It was manufactured in 1897 at Rock Island Illinois at the Rock Island Arsenal. It is one of three that were returned to The US and serves as a memorial to all the veterans of the Spanish American War. It was through the efforts of the Spokane Veteran Soldiers Monument Association that this cannon came to be here.

Nearby in the cemetery is a Memorial to veterans of the civil war and the graves of several veterans of both wars.

Founded in 1888, Greenwood Memorial Terrace Cemetery is on North Government Way, at number 211.
