Located in the north-central part of St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery is the grave of Frieda J. Deas, who lived to be almost 104 years of age. She was born Feb. 28, 1901 and died Jan. 14, 1905. I located a page on
FindaGrave.com devoted to her
here. There's an online
obituary of Frieda from
RootsWeb.Ancestry.com that reads:
Long-time Siskiyou County resident Frieda Deas passed away Jan. 14, 2005, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Cloverdale.
She was born Feb. 28, 1901, in Schattderf, Switzerland, one of seven children. She came to America in 1921, at the age of 20. She resided in New York where she was employed as a maid. In 1927, she moved with her sister and brother-in-law to California.
For a short time she was employed with the Frank Truttman family as a cook. She then went to work on the Oak Farm between Etna and Callahan, for Paul and Suzi Denny. While employed with the Denny family, she met her future husband, Frank Deas, and the couple was married Dec. 6, 1927, in Etna.
They moved to the Dennis Trufemus ranch on Cricket Flat on Oberlin Road.
The couple had two daughters, Vera Rizzardo of Montague, and Stella Sutter, of Cloverdale.
They operated a dairy for 37 years, until Frank's death in 1964. Following that, she went to work for Father Sullivan, a local parish priest, as housekeeper. After several years, she retired, sold the ranch and moved to Yreka. In 1986, she moved to Cloverdale to be with her daughter, Stella.
Her passtime was visiting friends, crocheting, embroidery and knitting. She made many socks for her family.
Survivors include a brother, Xaver Zraggen, of Grenada; daughters and sons-in-law, Stella and Martin Sutter, of Cloverdale, and Vera and Mario Rizzardo, of Montague; grandchildren and spouses, Ernie and Devanee Rizzardo, of Yreka, Frank Rizzardo, of Montague, Linda McKuen, of Merrill, Ore., Louise and Allen Gallup, of Mission Viejo, Jim Pfanner, of Los Angeles, Bill Pfanner, of Davis, Hiedie and Jeff Adamski, Brenda and David Cassady, of Red Oak, Texas, and Bill Session, of Linden.
Frieda was a great-grandmother of 20, and great-great-grandmother of six. She was predecceased by her husband Frank, and grandson, Hans Pflanner, of San Francisco, in 1984.
She was loved by all, and a good sport, always ready for whatever anyone planned, work or play. She will be missed.
A visitation and Mass of Christian burial is 10 a.m. Jan. 19, at St. Jooseph's Church in Yreka, followed by burial at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Girdner Funeral Chapel in Yreka. (Siskiyou Daily News, 19 Jan 2005)
