Yreka's Western Railroad Station is home to the
Blue Goose Train Excursion, a train tour that was very popular with train enthusiasts throughout the region. Unfortunately, this business has fallen under hard times, financially, and has closed its doors to the public as it awaits its fate in regards to court settlements on debts owed to other parties.
There is a historical marker located near this train depot that noted its history. After the Southern Pacific Company chose to bypass Yreka when it was running its mainline through the area, Yreka decided to build its own railroad and commenced operation on January 9, 1889. It was later incorporated as the Yreka Western Railroad in 1933. The ensuing decades saw the decline of this railroad and in 1986 the City of Yreka purchased it and began the summer train excursion called the Blue Goose Train Excursion. This popular tourist spot continued to carry train enthusiasts from Yreka to the town of Montague and back as part of its route for the next quarter-century. Unfortunately, due to either poor management or the economic downturn (or both), this railroad station and tourist locale closed its doors (when, exactly, I don't know) and is awaiting the outcome of many debts that are owed to third parties. In addition, the future of the locomotive that once hauled freight and people is in jeopardy of being sold and moved out of Yreka.
The Blue Goose entity maintains a web page on Facebook that contains many photos, stories and history at the link provided below.
