Visitors to historic downtown Yreka are welcomed to a wrought-iron gateway arch that greets travelers arriving onto Miner Street. This arch originally stood a short block away on Miner Street and the former historic Hwy 99 (now Main St/Hwy 3), also facing east/west and automobiles would pass under it as they traveled through town. The arch was taken down and neglected for many years in city storage until the local Soroptimist organization resurrected it again and placed it at the current location. I located a nice online article that discusses the history of this arch
here. There's even a picture of this arch at its original location. An excerpt from the article reads:
The Yreka Arch was taken down in the 1930s during this reconstruction of the Pacific Highway into Highway 99. It was in storage and fell into disrepair until 1976 when the local Soroptimists made the move to restore and replace the sign. The citizens of Yreka helped with funding and support and in 1977 the Welcome Arch was rededicated. It now sits at the Central Yreka Interchange but seems somehow smaller at eye level.
