The mule and driver sculpture were created in 2000 by Maryland artist, Toby Mendez. The sculpture depicts a mule with harness along with his young driver. The mules were used to tow boats along the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal via lines between the boat and the mule which walked along the tow path. The sculpture is located in front of the former Western Maryland Railway station which is now used as the headquarters and visitors center for the Canal Place Heritage Area. The sculpture has become a popular place for people to have their photos taken.
