The rough granite THOMAS CRESAP MONUMENT was erected to the memory of the memory of the 'Pathfinder, Pioneer, and Patriot' -- called Big Spoon by the Indians because of his tactful hospitality to them -- who was one of Maryland's most notable Indian traders. Cresap was the father of Daniel Cresap for whom Dan's Mountain is named; of Thomas Cresap, Jr., killed on Savage Mountain by Indians; and of Michael Cresap, Revolutionary hero.- Maryland: A Guide to the Old Line State, Cumberland section, pg. 267.
