It is Oak Apple Week in Midsomer Barton and Marion Slade is found drowned in the village stream. Marks on her shoulders show she was murdered. A post mortem reveal she had taken a large dose of tranquilisers, which may have caused her to have delusions.

Whilst investigating Marion’s murder, a man, Mark Castle is found with his throat cut in the nearby woods. The post mortem reveals that Mark also had the same tranquilisers in his body. The deaths are obviously connected.

The final murder in the plot is that of local GP, Dr Wellow. He is found brutally stabbed to death at his home. As well as being the GP, he is also the local rake, having an affair with the local stable’s owner, Grace Starkey.

Barnaby’s big breakthrough comes when he suspects creepy Alistair Gooding taking an over keen interest in young girls. He decides to look into the death of Marion’s daughter, Bella, who had died several years earlier. In her letters he finds that she had an underage lover and had had an abortion. At the time the cause of death was listed as food poisoning, but Barnaby starts to think that the cause might be different and that Dr Wellow was involved, hence his untimely death.

One of the letters was from Rob Pride, Marion’s gardener, which links him to the death of Marion and Dr Wellow. Rob Pride had murdered Marion because she had allowed the position of Oak Queen be re-instated, a position that was last held by Bella. Mark Castle was murdered because he was the father of Bella’s child and boasted about it when drunk. Dr Wellow is killed because of the abortion. Pride is arrested before he attempts to kill the new Oak Queen.
