Inkpen Manor, the home of the Inkpen family, has a memorial garden in its grounds that local villagers are allowed access to. The present incumbent, Elspeth Inkpen-Thomas, has decided to dig up the garden and make a visitor tea room. There are heated words on the subject at a public meeting in the village hall. The next day Felicity Inkpen Thomas is found dead in the garden, having been attacked by a spade.

Suspicions fall on a neighbour, Rodney Widger, who has been taking pot shots at the tyres of garden visitors, and Daniel Bolt, the gardener, who has had affairs with both Felicity and Elspeth Inkpen Thomas. Bolt is also a beneficiary of Elspeth’s will.

Elspeth has a blazing row with her mother, Naomi, and goes to stay at the vicarage. The vicar’s wife leaves Elspeth having a soak in the bath whilst she goes to the church. Someone creeps into the vicarage and leaves some salad leaves in a bowl for Elspeth. She eeats them and goes into convulsions. The stranger force feeds more of the leaves until she is dead, and then leaves by the window, locking the door behind her.

Whilst Inkpen Manor has been the seat of the Inkpens, there was a time when they lost the manor to the Bennett family. It was the Bennett’s that built the memorial garden. Barnaby is interested that Cynthia Bennett, wife of Gerald Bennett the owner, suddenly disappeared. Jane Bennett, the daughter, has been strenuously campaigning for the memorial garden to be kept in tact. Barnaby notices that the garden was finished one week after Cynthia disappeared. He orders the garden be dug up. He finds Cynthia’s grave.

Troy brings Rodney Widger in for questioning. He was known to have had fractious arguments with Cynthia. Widger confesses that he and another villager, Charles King, had had threesome romps in a local hotel, and when they left her at the manor she was alive. The plot darkens when Troy finds that the taxi driver that took Cynthia away from the manor. He claims she only had a shoulder bag, yet all of Cynthia’s clothes had gone. Barnaby goes to see Jane Bennett, but when he arrives he finds Gerald Bennett dead. Jane Bennett confesses to killing Cynthia and killing Gerald, who was terminally ill, so that he would not find out about Cynthia’s activities. She denies murdering the Inkpens though.

As well as having a legitimate daughter, Felicity, Elspeth also had a daughter Hilary, who went out for adoption but found her way home. Investigations show that Hilary’s father was Richard Deverell. Deverell is a bishop who is in the running to be a cardinal. Richard Deverell’s father, Augustus Deverell, had given Naomi Inkpen the money to buy the manor to keep them quiet about Richard’s paternity. Felicity had shown Hilary Inkpen a copy of the blackmail note Naomi had written and gloated. Hilary had killed Felicity and then Elspeth.
