The story starts abruptly with Jack Fincher, dressed as a cowboy, riding down the main street of Ford Florey. He arrives at Mary Morgan’s cottage with a rifle, enters, and shoots her dog dead.

Jack Fincher is a local farmer who runs a Wild West show in Ford Florey. He is in dispute with a neighbouring farmer, Silas Burbage, over a plot of land known as the “swamp.” Fincher is married to Susan, but is having an affair with his farm manager Faye Lennox. They have a son Leo. Silas Burbage on the other hand has a son Adam, who is the local optician.

The Wild West show takes place locally and the Barnaby’s go as visitors. During the show a woman, dressed as a witch at a dunking attraction, falls into her pool with blood coming from her. The woman is Faye Lennox and she has been shot dead by a good shot from some distance. Strangely the bullet is an American round. At about the same time Leo Fincher has had an altercation, involving firearms, with Dan Malko, a local traveller who wants to buy the swamp for a traveller’s site.

Silas Burbage wants to sell the land to Malko and decides to fence off the land. Jack Fincher sees the fence and decides to take it down. A little while later he is found dead, having been dragged behind a horse for some considerable distance. Nearly everyone involved with the swamp is a suspect.

The next to be attacked is Jude Langham, a local artist. Langham’s family where evicted by the Fincher and he claims to have a deed showing the ownership of the swamp. An intruder wrecks his workshop, and in the process he sustains a head wound. On his way to hospital Jude mutters about a chimney. At first Jones doesn’t understand the reference, but later discovers a painting of a Colorado chimney, with the deed behind it. Legal opinion however rules the document not water tight.

Following Jude Langham’s attack Leo Fincher is found dead astride a horse in the main street. He has a set of playing cards grasped in his hands. Shortly after Fergal Jenner, the Fincher family lawyer, is found stabbed whilst he was looking at an ancient ledger. When the ledger is found there are pages ripped out.

Matters come to a head when Barnaby receives a bullet and a note that says that Susan Fincher is to be next. Barnaby rush to the farm house and become trapped inside when Adam Burbage rides up in cowboy gear on horseback. He starts shooting up the farmhouse from the outside whist Barnaby and Jones call for a firearms team. Unfortunately the firearms team get stuck in the swamp and Barnaby has to confront Burbage in a wild west draw. Fortunately Jones uses the bullet sent to Barnaby in a pistol to wing Burbage. When the truth is told, Susan Fincher put the deluded Adam Burbage up to commit the murders so that she could inherit the farm and the swamp.
