Barnaby is asked by Dr Bullard to look into the disappearance of Lucy Oliver, the daughter of a family friend. Lucy went missing after joining a new age group called the Oblong Foundation. The Foundation operate from Malham Hall, once the home of Jeremy and Carolyn Lambert, but now owned by their daughter Ruth Lambert. Jeremy and Carolyn died in a gas explosion on their boat.

Jones is sent undercover to join the Oblong Foundation, whilst Barnaby talks to the villagers, most of whom think that the Foundation have something to do with Lucy’s disappearance. Local publicans, Paddy and Claire Powell, tell Barnaby that Lucy had an argument with the leader of the group, Freddie Raft, shortly before she disappeared.

Barnaby starts by investigating Jeremy and Carolyn’s death. The Lambert’s solicitor, Sarah Crane, tells Barnaby that the Lamberts had withdrawn many thousands of pounds shortly before their death, possibly to evade inheritance tax, or by gambling. They had also asked about how to draw up a promissory note. Barnaby starts to think that the Lamberts were murdered because of a loan they had made to someone. Barnaby learns from the Powells that Carolyn was a heavy smoker and would light up at the slightest excuse, particularly if the phone rang. Barnaby now has an inkling of how the explosion was triggered – by a phone call.

Before Barnaby can complete his inquiries Freddie Raft is found stabbed to death. Lucy Oliver had returned to the foundation and found her body. Lucy explains that she and Freddie had been lovers, but had fallen out after she had found Freddie counting large amounts of money from the safe. When Barnaby eventually manages to get the safe open, the money is still there. Perhaps Freddie’s killer murdered Freddie to get the promissory note from the safe. There is no note in the safe.

When Jones looks in the attic he finds the Lambert’s laptop. On it is a copy of the promissory note. The witness of the note was stabbed to death on the day the Lamberts died. The money was advanced to Claire Powell, their former chef, so that she could buy the pub. Unfortunately her husband Paddy had barred the Lamberts from the pub. The Lamberts had asked Claire for the money back and Claire had killed them. She had tried to get rid of all copies of the note and the witness, unfortunately she had overlooked the laptop copy.
