A local poacher dies in a leaky house owned by Melissa Townsend. She has received threatening letters about the death. Her friend, Sally Rickworth, is later found asleep in her crashed car. Sally fails the breathalyser and is banned from driving. Barnaby investigates the letters.

Whilst Barnaby investigates the local vet has a burglary, where horse tranquilisers and syringes are stolen. The thief left a wellington print outside the vet’s surgery. Later Melissa is found dead near her swimming pool, having been injected by the tranquiliser.

Melissa had been friendly with local con man Adam Keyne. Keyne is facing the baillifs and goes out in search of money. He is found dead in a barn having fallen through an upper floor and been impaled on machinery below. The floor had been sawn through.

The vet is the next to die. He is found dead on his tennis court, having been injected with the tranquiliser. Barnaby manages to find the wellington boots of the burglar. They had belonged to the poacher’s daughter, and she was seen burying them in her garden. She confesses to the theft, but has the drugs still in tact. Obviously someone else has access to the vet’s drugs. It soon becomes clear that the vet’s wife is the murderer.

The vet’s wife had been to a party and wanted a lift home. She found Sally passed out in her car and decided to drive the car home. Being drunk she crashed the car and left Sally asleep in the car afterwards. Unfortunately she had been seen by Melissa and Adam. Melissa and Adam decided to blackmail the vet’s wife because she had not confessed about the crash. Adam and Melissa were killed to stop the blackmail. The vet found out and he had to be killed.
