Bertie has set his heart on running for election to the Drones’ catering committee, but is barred because of his conviction for stealing a policeman’s helmet. After hearing the news he bumps into Pauline Stoker. She is being followed by a mysterious stranger in a ginger beard. Bertie offers to take her down to Chuffnell Hall in his car, but runs out of petrol on the way. Pauline stays in a pub overnight, whilst Bertie sleeps in the car.

Bertie and Pauline have dinner at Chuffnel Hall along with J Washburn Stoker and Sir Roderick and Lady Glossop. Mr Stoker is offering to buy Chuffnel Hall and turn it into a sanatorium, run by Sir Roderick. Hearing of Bertie’s past and the fact that Pauline and Bertie were out all the previous night, Mr Stoker storms out of dinner and calls the deal off.

Mr Stoker lures Bertie and Jeeves to his yacht for young Dwight Stoker’s birthday party. Once on board he locks them in a cabin so that he can have a shotgun marriage between Pauline and Bertie. Bertie, with Jeeves assistance escapes the yacht dressed as a minstrel and merging with a troop of minstrels from the Drones Club, hired for Dwight’s party.

Meanwhile Sir Roderick is at Chuffnel Hall. To amuse young Seabury, Sir Roderick blacks up as a minstrel. Unfortunately Seabury is unappreciative and Sir Roderick clips him round the ear. Chuffy ejects Sir Roderick into the night. Outside he meets up with Bertie, also blacked up. They decide to drive over to Chuffnel Parva where the Drones minstrels are playing. Hopefully the Drones minstrels will help them get the blacking off.

When Mr Stoker realises that Bertie has escaped, he asks Jeeves advice. Jeeves suggests that he blacks up and sneaks into Chuffnel Hall to kidnap Bertie. Mr Stoker goes ashore with blackened face. Unfortunately for Mr Stoker, Bertie, and Sir Roderick, it is Lamas Eve, the night when the boggies are about, according to local folk lore. They are soon pursued by the local constabulary.

They all head for Barmy’s aunts place at Chuffnel Parva. The police eventually arrest all the minstrels, Bertie, Mr Stoker and Sir Roderick. Fortunately Chuffy is the magistrate and they all end up with a fine. Jeeves reminds the members of the Drones Club that the whole club now has a criminal record and a rule change may be in order.
