Merton Council's Arts Team secured £20,000 of external funding to commission a new piece of artwork to be placed on the forecourt of the newly designed station. Partnership working between Merton, TFL, South West Trains and Network Rail has been the key to unlocking this successful project.

The new sculpture was unveiled on 21 June 2012.

About the sculpture:

A local artist, Isabelle Southwood, has produced the winning design - a contemporary sculpture of a Stag; made from steel. The Stag, at its highest point, will stand approximately 3 metres high and 3 metres in length, which will be a landmark for Wimbledon.

About the artist:

Isabelle Southwood was born in London and raised in Haarlem, Aberdeen, Wimbledon and The Hague. She has been involved with various projects and has worked for public art company Up Projects. The style of her work is mainly focussed around creating spontaneity and humour within her works.

Inspiration for the sculpture:

"As a child growing up in Wimbledon, my memories were not of tennis or Wombles, but of the local landscape. In particular the grand mysterious stag that sits upon Stag Lodge in Wimbledon village".

The artist's vision was that the sculpture links the heritage of Wimbledon Common with the busy urban environment of Wimbledon town. The Stag will give the impression that it has wandered from its rural landscape into the busy urban environment of Wimbledon.

Many thanks to The London Borough of Merton website for the above.
