The ladle on the train car was used to hold molten slag, defined as the waste matter separated from metals during the smelting or refining of ore. A purpose-built transfer rail car running on rail transported the ladle to an outdoor area where the slag was poured into Muggah’s Creek, an open air pit designed to contain this material.
"Foundry ladle refers to a steel vessel that has a lifting bail fitted so that the vessel can be carried by an overhead crane or rail system and is also fitted with a mechanical means for rotating (or tilting) the vessel, usually in the form of a gearbox."

The rail car was used on an ongoing basis to transport the slag to its final destination in the vicinity of the steel mill. This rail car and others like it were build specifically for the purpose of transporting slag within a localized area.
