The Jones County courthouse was built in 1910, when horses and carriages were still a common form of travel in West Texas. At that time, an upping stone would have been a necessary amenity for folks coming to the courthouse.

Today, this upping stone sits quietly in a landscaped bed, waiting in vain for the day some lady will need it to alight from her horse-drawn carriage or some gentleman in spurs will need to use it to dismount from his horse.
