Hanging on the outer wall near the east entrance to the State Capitol Building in downtown Sacramento is a bronze plaque that reads:

IN GRATEFUL MEMORY
OF THE BRAVE MEN
FROM CALIFORNIA
WHO SERVED
GALLANTLY IN WAR,
1861 - 1865. THIS
MEMORIAL PLAQUE
IS DEDICATED ONE
HUNDRED YEARS
LATER IN TRIBUTE
TO THEIR SACRIFICES.

CALIFORNIA CIVIL WAR
CENTENNIAL COMMISSION MAY 30, 1963

This memorial plaque is very inconspicuous where it resides but does contrast well over the white granite building. Accompanying this memorial plaque are some wonderful relief art panels made of what looks like steel and represents many of the facets of social and cultural evolution such as technology, medicine, agriculture, etc.
