La cathédrale de Vienne occupe le même site depuis le IVe siècle, mais aucune trace de construction antérieure au Xe siècle ne subsiste. La cathédrale est reconstruite entre 1030 et 1070 environ par l’archevêque Léger.
La construction du bâtiment actuel est entreprise en 1130 dans le style roman. De cette époque datent les parties les plus anciennes, à savoir la partie de la nef comprise entre les 5e et 11e travées. L’édification se poursuit au XIIIe siècle : le style devient alors gothique, comme en témoigne le chœur, le début et les parties hautes de la nef. Le nom de Guillaume de l’Œuvre est avancé comme architecte. La cathédrale est consacrée par le pape Innocent IV sous le vocable de Saint-Maurice, le 20 avril 1251. La construction se poursuit jusqu’au XVIe siècle avec notamment l’élévation de la façade. La dernière pierre est posée en 1529.Octobre 1311 à avril 1312 : le Concile de Vienne convoqué par le pape Clément V se déroule dans la cathédrale. Ce concile est resté fameux pour avoir ordonné la suppression des Templiers.
Par la suite, l’édifice a beaucoup souffert des guerres de Religion au XVIe siècle. Les huguenots détruisent notamment la plupart des vitraux et l’ensemble des sculptures de la façade le 20 mars 1562. Pendant la Révolution, l’église est transformée en grenier à foin et en caserne. L’église est rendue au culte en 1802 mais les deux cloîtres et trois chapelles sont détruites en 1803–1804, pour restructurer le tissu urbain aux alentours. Le palais épiscopal est détruit à la même période. Enfin, la tour Nord est victime du feu en 1869.

The construction of the present building was begun in 1130 in the Romanesque style . From this period date the oldest parts, namely the part of the nave between the 5th and 11th bays. The name of William the Work is advanced as an architect. The cathedral was consecrated by Pope Innocent IV in the name of Saint -Maurice , 20 April 1251. Construction continues until the sixteenth century, including the elevation of the facade. The last stone was laid in 1311 1529.Octobre April 1312 : the Council of Vienna convened by Pope Clement V is set in the cathedral. This council has remained famous for ordering the suppression of the Templars.
Thereafter , the building has suffered the Wars of Religion in the sixteenth century. Destroy the Huguenots including most of the windows and all the sculptures on the facade March 20, 1562 . During the Revolution , the church was transformed into a hayloft and barracks. The church is made ??for worship in 1802 but the two cloisters and three chapels were destroyed in 1803-1804 , to restructure the urban fabric around . The episcopal palace is destroyed at the same time. Finally, the North Tower falls victim to fire in 1869.
