On the east side of the bridge carrying IL Route 17 over the Illinois River is a population sign for the city of Lacon.
The sign is on the eastbound side of the road, on a shoulder between the road and a wide parking area for the boat ramp, a marina, and commercial operations.
Lacon has a population of 1979 (2000 Census). The city downtown lies on a steady incline up the bluff. The courthouse is at the other end of downtown, at the intersection with IL Route 26.
