The town Horaždovice lies about 15 km north-west of the town Sušice on the Otava river.
The originally market seat was founded on the left bank of the Otava river by Bavor I of Strakonice. The village became a town and it was fortified in 1293.
The access to the town was originally enabled through three gates. Only the Pražská Brána (Prague Gate) - sometimes called the Cervená Brána (Red Gate), the second oldest town gateway in Bohemia - and the remains of the south-western Prachatická Brána (Prachatice Gate) have been preserved up till the present day.
