A small, but strategically important, water fortress stood originally in the place of the present chateau. Through time it took the role of the Práchen castle and it was enlarged into the Gothic town castle.
t the end of the 16th century the castle was under the ownership of the Švamberks, who rebuilt it into a Renaissance chateau. They reconstructed it one more time in the Baroque style in the 17th century and then the chateau became a possession of the Mansfeld family.

Predchudcem dnešního renesancne-barokního zámku byla malá, ale strategicky významná vodní tvrz ze 13. století. V 16. století byly pozustatky hradu v majetku Švamberku; ti ho upravili na renesancní zámek. Koncem 17. století byly uskutecneny ješte barokní úpravy a pocátkem století 18. prešel zámek do majetku Mansfeldu.
Zámek má ctyri krídla, která mezi sebou svírají prostorné pravoúhlé nádvorí. V jihozápadním traktu, pristaveném italským architektem Salominim, jsou dnes muzejní expozice.
