The chateau stands in the town Blatná about 20 km north of the town Strakonice on the bank of the Lomnice river. It is - in common with the chateau Cervená Lhota - one of the best known water castles.
Originally it was a water fortress dating from the beginning of the 13th century. At the end of the 14th century a castle was built in this place. The new Renaissance palace was added between 1523 - 1530. The whole complex was rebuilt into the Gothic style between 1850 - 1856.

Zámek Blatná je spolu se zámkem Cervená Lhota jedním z nejznámejších vodních zámku v Cechách. Puvodne zde stávala tvrz založená v první polovine 13. století. Na jejím míste byl ješte pred rokem 1400 vystaven vodní hrad. Ten byl v letech 1523 - 1530 doplnen renesancním palácem a v letech 1850 - 1856 regotizován.
Nejstarší cástí hradu je románská kaple, která vznikla okolo roku 1220. Starý palác v severozápadní cásti hradu a vstupní vež pocházejí z 15. století.
Zámecké interiéry zdobí - zejména ve vstupní veži - vzácné nástenné malby z druhé poloviny 15. století. Rozlehlý zámecký park byl vybudovaný pocátkem 19. století z drívejší obory a je se zámkem spojen dreveným mostem.
