At the border for Chillicothe and along IL Route 29 is this artistic sign for the village.
The sign is located on the east side of the road, a little after the population sign, and before a motel. It is also south of the intersection with Cloverdale Road.
The wooden sign has several parts. There is a part with a post and a presentation of all the organizations that meet in Chillicothe. The main sign post has two columns with a triangular feature over them. Between the posts is the sign itself, with the name, "Chillicothe," along the bottom, and the scene framed in a semi-circle above the name. The artistic scene shows a river with a truss bridge crossing it at a narrow point. The land has multi-colored splotches, probably to depict trees in autumn. The river has a river steamboat to represent the time when a main form of transformation was by water. The truss bridge is a railroad bridge - the other major transportation route in the early days of Illinois - still is for freight traffic.
The sign appears to have faded color. In particular, the river, which was probably painted either blue or blue-violet, now is a purplish red color.
The area around the sign is mostly commercially developed. There is a strip mall on the west side of the road. Beyond this sign is a motel. To the south is the start of corn fields.
Chillicothe is a village of about 6000 people (2000 Census).
