Parked underneath a roofed enclosure next to the
Klamath County Museum is a red International-model fire truck. There's a placard in front of the vehicle that reads:
Klamath Agency fire truck
This fire truck was used at Klamath Agency, the headquarters for the Klamath Indian Reservation about 35 miles north of Klamath Falls. The agency was shut down after the federal government "terminated" the Klamath Tribe in 1954. Under termination, the million-acre reservation was abolished with most of the area becoming national forest land.
This fire truck is tucked away and not easy to engage and I wish this vehicle were more out in the open for the public to appreciate.
I've been by the Klamath Agency grounds many times over the years. There are still a few structures remaining and a charter school used to reside on the former Indian Reservation until a few years ago. Now, the few buildings are deteriorating and in jeopardy of crumbling to the ground after years of neglect. There's a sign on a gate near the entrance to the grounds that states that the Klamath Tribes are in the process of renovating a few of the buildings for tribal use. The location is along Hwy 62 as you head toward the ever-popular Crater Lake National Park.
