The Bohemian Forest (Sumava) is a low mountain range in Central Europe. Geographically, the mountains extend from South Bohemia in the Czech Republic to Austria and Bavaria in Germany. They create a natural border between the Czech Republic on one side and Germany and Austria on the other.
About Hartmanice
Hartmanice is the oldest seat in the so-called High Šumava. The customs office already existed in this place on the trade route in 1209. Later it was medieval miner's seat near the finding places of gold.
The oldest building in Hartmanice is the Late-Gothic St. Catherine's Church. It originates from the 15th century and its present appearance is from the Baroque reconstructions in the 18th century.

Hartmanice jsou nejstarší obcí tzv. vysoké Šumavy. Ve stredoveku to byla hornická osada, kde se dolovalo zlato. Již pocátkem 14. století byly mesteckem s horními právy. Pocátkem 17. století propujcil císar Rudolf II. Hartmanicum vedle rady výsad souvisejících s hornictvím a jeho významem pro zemi i mestský erb. Do tricetileté války byly Hartmanice ceskou obcí - za války však byly vypáleny a na mnoho let zpustly. Obnovu zaznamenala obec až ve druhé polovine 17. století. Pozustatky štol na zlato jsou patrné v lese asi 3 km západne od obce.
Nejstarší památkou Hartmanic je pozdne gotický kostel svaté Kateriny pocházející z 15. století. Jeho soucasná barokní podoba je výsledkem prestaveb provedených ve století osmnáctém.
