One odd story involving the house is that of a tourist who spotted a woman in an old fashioned dress standing at the bottom of the stairs. The tourist thought the woman was an employee until she quickly moved away and seemed to disappear. Some believe this is the spirit of John's wife Marguerite. Others have seen a rocking chair in the house moving on its own, as if someone was sitting there, or had just stood. There have also been some who have seen people standing in the windows of the second floor, after everyone has left for the day.
It is worth noting that the McLoughlin House does not stand in its original location. The building was moved in 1909 to save it from demolishment. Perhaps the ghostly child is one connected to its new location instead of one connected to the house itself.
The McLoughlin House is open to the public five days a week, from Wednesday-Sunday.
