Residing under a roofed enclosure next to the
Klamath County Museum are at least two fire carts. There is a placard located in front of one of the fire carts that reads:
Fire hose carts
Firemen worked doubly hard to battle structure fires in the early 1900s. Mostly serving as volunteers, firefighters first had to ride horseback or run to the fire station, then transport their gear to the scene of the fire.
Carts such as these were used to haul fire hoses, which often tapped a water supply such as a lake, stream or canal. Firefighters operated hand pumps to fill the hoses.
As the city grew in the early 1900s, a network of water pipes with fire hydrants was installed. Gasoline-powered trucks made it easier to haul equipment and cut the time required to respond to a fire.
Fires a frequent cause of tragedy
Like most towns, Klamath Falls has seen its share of devastating fires. A blaze in 1890 virtually wiped out the town's small business district. The city's most deadly blaze came on Labor Day, 1920, when nine people died in the Houston Hotel fire. Even today, with modern firefighting equipment, fires often cause severe damage and occasionally loss of life.
The other one or two fire carts are tucked away behind the front cart and all look alike. A nice piece of history preserved here at the Museum.
