Leo Mol was born Leonid Molodozhanyn in the town of Polonne in western Ukraine on January 15, 1915. The son of a potter, young Leonid spent his formative years working in his father’s shop. After studying art in Vienna, he moved to Germany to take up sculpting as a profession. In the late 1940s, he decided to emigrate from war-torn Europe shortening his name to Leo Mol in the process. With the encouragement of some friends in western Canada, Mr. Mol and his wife arrived in Saskatchewan in December of 1949.
Not finding much demand for sculpture in the farmlands of Saskatchewan, Leo Mol eventually relocated to the city of Winnipeg where he secured several commissions to decorate churches. His big break came when he won an international competition for the design of a monument to Taras Shevchenko, the Ukrainian bard and painter, to be located in Washington DC, USA. Soon, other national and international commissions rolled in establishing Leo Mol’s reputation as a preeminent sculptor.
A prolific artist, Leo Mol donated several hundred of his personal works to the city of Winnipeg in 1989. They were placed in the city’s large Assiniboine Park in an area now called the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden which officially opened in 1992. One of these works, a large statue of lumberjacks at work, was chosen as the subject of a postage stamp, one of a pair of stamps honoring Canadian sculptors.
Among Leo Mol’s many honors and awards was being named an officer of the Order of Canada in 1989 and the Order of Manitoba in 2000. The multi-faceted artist is also known for drawings, terra-cotta figurines and stained-glass windows.
